Celebrating a Successful Year

On Tuesday evening, a roomful of tutors, students and parents met to celebrate a successful tutoring year at the Lakewood Lutheran site.  Under the direction of Darleen Koskinen, a wonderful dinner was shared by all and awards were handed out to all students and tutors.  Cleveland Reads provided books for all of the children in the program.

Here are a few pictures of tutors and students. . .

In addition, check out this short video message from one of the parents.

Year after  year, children and adults are blessed at this site.  Quite a few of the pairs are planning to meet during the summer and recently a number of adults have started receiving tutoring to further their skills as well.  What a blessing!

Tutoring Bug!

Written by Jeanne Evers.

I started tutoring at Trinity a little over a year ago and have been seriously bitten by the tutoring bug!  Mary Forsythe, the site coordinator, is an awesome lady whose love for the kids – and the tutors – radiates from her face!  She always has a warm welcome and a smile for everyone!

I think the thing that really astounds me is not “just” the way the kids come running down the stairs to meet with their tutor, but the number of tutors who come right from work, or come from the other side of town, or  come even though they might not be feeling 100% but don’t want to miss a night – or disappoint a child!

A few weeks ago a new face appeared and in speaking with her, I found out that, No – she’s not  a tutor, but that didn’t stop her from driving  45 minutes to Trinity to see if she could help out in any way.  (She could!!)

While this has been only part of my experience at Trinity, I know that the same holds true for the other tutoring sites:  the dedicated coordinators, the enthusiastic students, and the committed tutors combine to make the whole tutoring experience a wonderful place to share and receive God’s love.

Never thought I’d be thankful for being bitten by a bug!!!

The Trinity tutoring program has nominated Kathy Eigenbrod for the Cleveland Reads Volunteer of the Year Award.  Kathy is a member of Trinity Lutheran and has been a positive and enthusiastic tutor for the past six years.  She has promoted the tutoring program by bringing in four family members and two friends.  She has shown us all what a faithful, dedicated volunteer tutor is!  Thank you Kathy for your wonderful work!

The Volunteer Reception will be held in April.

Trinity’s Ten in a Row

The Trinity Tutoring program is pleased to announce its most recent inductees into the Ten in a Row Club!  These dedicated students and tutors trekked through ice and snow to make it to every tutoring session from December 11 through March 12.  Nice work guys!

Tutoring at Trinity

img_6357

Every Thursday evening 45 students and 45 tutors gather at Trinity Lutheran for one-on-one tutoring. Under the leadership of Mary Forsythe, a retired teacher, the program has been running strong for eight years.  Tutors work with students on homework, reviewing material studied in school, reading kits and educational games.

Students come from Cleveland public schools, parochial schools, charter schools and home schooling and range from kindergarten to adults working towards their GED.  Tutors come from more than 18 different suburbs and range in age from high school freshmen to over 80 years old.
